Everybody has heard the term 'boy-racer', however this term is somewhat antiquated now, as the major problem on
the UK roads today is drivers (often aged between 17 and 25) in souped up cars. Unfortunately these cars tend to
be older cars with a great many miles on the clock (and usually at least one serious accident) which are then
modified in order to increase power output. These drivers are often unaware of other road users either through a belief that they 'own the road' or simply through distraction from their often very expensive soundsystem. Far worse however are drivers such as the one that I encountered last night. I was performing a perfectly legal manouver and the other driver tried to force me into racing him. As I could not return into the lane I was originally in, and could place myself neither in front of or behind the other driver I found myself lying under the bike on a roundabout. To compound the situation the other driver did not stop and simply carried on going despite the fact that I was clearly lieing under a very heavy bike. We have to get these drivers off our roads, unfortunately that is not going to happen easily, most of these drivers do not drive that way when they take their test, so there is no non-discriminatory way for the examiners to fail them. (Personally given that most of these drivers are chavs I would love to see an examiner able to fail someone for wearing a tracksuit or a sovereign!). However the DSA in conjuction with the DVLA could place a restriction on the maximum power output of any car that a new driver can drive. This License Restriction is already in effect for motorcyclists, a maximum output of 33bhp is allowed for 2 years before the rider can ride any power of bike. Whilst the torque of the engine would remain the same, at least a conservative power restriction would limit the speed at which these drivers drive. Additional restrictions could also be enforced along with current rules that are sledom enforced. (Neon lights etc). I believe that to fight this threat the Police should make more use of their powers of prohibition, if someone is pulled over for driving in the way commonly seen on our streets then they should be banned from driving that car for a month. Whilst points can tot-up to a lost license, it can take a while although the driver may commit the vehicle crimes regularly he will only get points when caught. Banning the driver from driving that vehicle for a month will help ensure that he remembers what happens should he get caught again. Prohibition should be used alongside the current points system not instead of. To help protect our streets, please sign this petition and just maybe the UK may have safer streets again. |
