There's a few mistruths that have been floating around for some time, and with the election beginning to loom, it's time they were stamped on. My Political feelings make no difference to this article, because they are not opinions, they are facts.
Myth 1: No-one wants ID Cards
Truth:
The reality is, some people do. Yes most people (myself included) are worried about the huge amount of data the Government wants, the security of the system etc. But anywhere that has to deal with age-related legislation (from the Off-License to the Cinema) would benefit greatly from these cards being compulsory. The individuals in these businesses would be better protected (did you know you can do time for selling alcohol to a minor?).
Myth 2: Only X% of the country voted for Labour
Truth:
Firstly, it doesn't matter what percentage of the country voted for Labour. What matters is the percentage of all the people who actually voted. So even if only 20% of the country voted for Labour, this could potentially still mean 100% of Voters voted for Labour. Quite frankly, if you didn't get off your backside and vote, you don't have the right to complain!
If you're trying to allege the Labour fixed the vote by saying that only 20% of the Country voted for Labour, then just come out and say it. Don't try to mislead people with figures, because it just makes you look like an idiot.
Myth 3: No-one voted for Gordon Brown to become Prime Minister
Truth:
This is a half myth. Yes, people did vote for him to become. The members of the Labour party, of which he is leader. No, you & I did not vote for him to become Prime Minister. But we also didn't vote for Tony Blair, John Major, Thatcher or any other to become Prime Minister. The way it works is you vote for the Representative in your area, and the leader of whichever party has the majority vote usually becomes Prime Minister. Gordon Brown was voted into Parliament by the members of his consituency, and then to Prime Minister by the members of the Labour Party.
Myth 4: The Conservatives will cut Public Spending as soon as they are in power
Truth:
A large part of the planned cuts, involves job losses. The Government cannot simply cut jobs, and the relevant unions will fight against un-necessary cuts. The Civil Service did not cause the repression, but seems to have moved into the firing line, whilst all the time the banks still pay their bonuses.
The Conservatives will however privatise everything that they possibly can, a method that has shown to be more costly in the long run.
Myth 5: MP's Expenses were illegal
Truth:
This is where the bone of contention lies. Most of the expenses were legal and within the rules (there may of course have been some fraudulent claims), which is why so many of the MP's seem so aggreived at having to pay the money back. The thing that was actually wrong, was that the rules allowed such a thing to happen. The media have painted it as the MP's breaking the rules, actually they didn't. Why no-one questioned the rules is another story of course!
So, I hope I have cleared up a few myths. I'm fed up of seeing the same old lines spun out across the internet, from people who are either trying to look intelligent, or are simply Daily Mail readers! If you spot a mistake, please feel free to Contact Me.
