Tony Blair Advocates ID Cards

As some may gave seen on BBC News yesterday, Mr Blair is very much for ID cards In fact his view was

"that as with CCTV and DNA the issue is one of "modernity" not civil liberties."

So Mr Blair believes we need to keep up with the times, and all hell to our privacy. The article suggests that Mr Blair does indeed believe that ID cards will help fight Terrorism, illegal immigration, Benefit fraud, Identity theft, and would also help to prevent the vulnerable, and help to solve crimes. Quite frankly I believe Mr Blair has his head buried in one of two places, either the sand or his own, probably best not to go there. The cards may help to tackle Benefit fraud, but that is assuming that all employers will wish to see the ID card before employing you. It will not stop illegal immigration in much the same way passports do not. Unless Mr Blair is planning to have us need an ID card just to buy bread, illegal immigration will not be stopped by this. Microsoft have said they believe ID cards will lead to a greater amount of ID theft, and for once I think MS may have it right. As for Terrorism, these people can fake passports, deceive customs officers, even fly planes. I think it is rather arrogant of Mr Blair to believe that people with this skillset will not be able to fake a national ID card.

The cost of National ID cards has been much criticised, the last time I looked the cost was going to be around £90 per person. That is an outrageous cost for something that the government intends to make compulsory, it is an unbelievable attempt to bring more money into the treasury as far as I am concerned.

Both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats have said that they will scrap the National ID scheme if they ever come to power.

Whilst I know Mr Blair is likely to be leaving us soon, I believe it is rather unintelligent of the Labour Party as a whole to continue pushing something that has so much unpopularity in the country. Don't they want to stay in power?
