As part of Defective by Designs Freedom Rings at the RIAA (mentioned in my blog earlier) I have just emailed Mr Haentjes, who is the Chairman of the IFPI, he is one of the people behind the recent raids on German Filesharers. I figured it would be a good gesture of goodwill to email him in German (Obwohl mein Deutsch arm ist) but a translation of the letter can be found below. I will refrain from posting his contact details here, however if I do receive a reply I will share it with everyone else. Dear Mr Haentjes, Firstly I wish to apologise for my terribly poor German, however I felt it would be better to try to contact you in your language than in my native tongue - English. I am writing to you today because I am Concerned about Digital Rights Management or DRM, this issue affects people worldwide, it is a restriction of our civil liberties. Do not misunderstand me, I do understand that you are trying to protect among other things your business model. However you surely must see that DRM simply drives people to download music illegally? The reason for this is DRM places constraints on otherwise legitimate users, the laws in a country governing copyright etc. should be more than sufficient. As you can surely appreciate another incident such as the Sony Fiasco cannot be allowed to happen. If you would like to discuss this more I eagerly await a reply, thank you very much for your time Ben I have just noticed this page, whilst doing the re-design of the site. As you may expect no reply was ever received. |
