I have taken quite a few Motorcycle tests with the DSA now and failed
every single one. Some have without a doubt been my fault, lane
discspline etc. However one thing I (and many others) seem to fail on is
the Turn in the road (a U-turn) for this manouever you cannot put a foot
down or you fail the manouever and the test. This is a manouever that
appears in every Motorcycle test that you do, yet even the examiners
cannot reasonably explain the significance of it, or the importance
attached to it. The thing that I find most odd about this is the fact that whilst the U-turn and emergency stop are in all Bike tests, such a lifesaving thing as an emergency stop does not necessarily have to appear in your car test. So for reasons known only to themselves the DSA seem to believe that a motorcyclists ability to perform a perfect U-turn is more important than a Car drivers ability to perform an emergency stop. Strange huh? Now let me tell you when I and most other motorcyclists perform U-turns (outside of test conditions and practising for the test), almost never! As far as I am aware there have been no accidents caused by a motorcyclists inability to perform a U-turn without putting their foot down. Prthaps some may have been caused by incorrect judgement of when to perform a U-turn but that does not relate to whether a foot goes down or not. Currently the only reasons I can see for the U-turn being in the test is so that the DSA can fail more people and so take more money from us. Worse still, In August 2008 the test will be changing, Motorcyclists will have an offroad section where they will have to U-turn, slalom, swerve, slowride and of course perform emergency stops. The emergency stop is already in the Bike test as a compulsory activity, however unlike the U-turn should you not do it correctly the examiner can (at his discretion) ask you to try it 1 more time. Once again the DSA seem to be rating the U-turn as far more critical than an emergency stop. I have my fourth test on friday so I am off to practise my U-turns now, should I fail on the U-turn again it may be time to get a response as to why it is so paramount from the DSA. Ben |
